It’s Not A Pirate’s Life For Me (I wonder what I’ll be?)
Whilst in España in March with a pal, Ned Champain, we wrote and recorded a song. The original intention was to write a song with the influences of our favourite folk-alternative / acoustic musicians, but after a couple of G&Ts and evidently too much seaside time, this song was born.
It follows the life of a pirate who’s only ever seen the world from the ocean, and he’s reached a point in his life where he now yearns for land.
Playing on the phrase “it’s a pirate’s life for me”, we’re spinning the conventional pirate story on its head, and hope to create an animation that appeals to children and families.
Why are the lyrics important to children?
It is all-too-often ingrained into us that we spend the entirety of our adult life working in the same job, whether we’re happy or not. The education system pushes us in a particular direction, not always taking into account the way a child may learn most effectively, or even offering the subject in which they would naturally strive. Our pirate has lived his whole life in a bubble, knowing only what he’s been raised into knowing. This call for adventure and exploration outside of his comfort zone is designed to teach two lessons:
Conventions aren’t rules
It’s healthy to see more of the world outside your own
Within this blog, you’ll find updates of the process of animating this children’s song, from still images to animated excerpts.
Let’s start off with the pirate’s design:
